HOLY SEE

The Holy See is the universal government of the Catholic Church and operates from the Vatican City State, which was created by the Lateran Treaty of 1929. In 756 the former Byzantine territory of the Duchy of Rome was given by King Pepin of the Franks to the Pope. This formed the core of the so-called Papal States, which existed till 1870, when they were annexed by the Kingdom of Italy.
